A generational talent and two-time NBA All Star, Simmons has become Australia’s most high-profile athlete – and he’s only 24. But it’s his performance off the court that is perhaps even more inspiring. Having set up the Philly Pledge to help those in this in the city of Philadelphia hit hardest by Coronavirus, he’s now turned his attention to home, establishing the #DoMore Project, alongside the likes of Margot Robbie and Hugh Jackman. Designed as “a call to action for Australians wanting to be more informed, more educated, and more engaged in challenging racism”, the project uses storytelling to challenge the existing narratives around racism and raise awareness of its impacts. After a year marked by protests against racial inequality, Simmons’ work could not be more timely – or more essential.
